The Mobile Education Programme has four main elements: Professional Development, Content, ICT Equipment and Connectivity.
The first major element of the Mobile Education Programme is professional development. The emphasis here is on ICT Integration, and training teachers on how to use ICT to enhance their effectiveness in the classroom. We believe this has to be done on a continuous basis for it to be effective.
A major aspect of the Vodacom Foundation’s professional development initiative is the training of e-Learning specialists. These are the people who train the teachers in the use of e-Learning in the classroom. The Vodacom Foundation has partnered with Microsoft for software and Microsoft Certificate Training in offering ICT skills training to teachers.
Also, each Teacher Centre needs an administrator to ensure the space is being properly looked after and fully optimised for the benefit of the community. The provincial departments provide Centre Managers, who are trained in management and administration. So, capacity building of the Centre Management is one of the key elements of this programme.
Our linkage with the University of Johannesburg and the South African Council for Educators (SACE) seeks to professionalise this by offering accredited training programmes.
Content is one of the four elements of the Mobile Education Programme. Vodacom, as South Africa’s leading network, is in unique position to host and share content with the country’s teachers and learners.
Foundation equips Teacher Centres with:
Since starting the Mobile Education Programme Vodacom has also equipped 1,615 schools with basic equipment such as laptop, whiteboard, data projector, as well as a Sim card so they can make use of the free content on e-School. 894 of these schools were equipped via the Vodacom Foundation, and the remainder were equipped as per Vodacom’s ICASA agreement, and as part of the Vodacom Millionaire Schools campaign. Since 2013 no further schools have been equipped, as the emphasis of the Vodacom Foundation has shifted to the Teacher Centres, and the promotion of access to content and teacher development .
Vodacom’s digital classroom is a free online platform offering online educational resources and articles. It’s also a platform for teachers to share ideas and stories, and find out more about the Teacher Centres. Data usage for the platform is zero rated if accessed from a Vodacom Sim card.
e-School is a free multi-media, online learning platform for Grades 4-12. Content is aligned to the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS). The platform makes learning fun and exciting, while being self-paced and convenient –encouraging learners to study smarter. Learners can watch videos, do tasks and quizzes, and monitor their own progress. The rewards programme ensures that learners see tangible benefits. E-school is endorsed by the Department of Basic Education. Data usage for the platform is zero rated if accessed from a Vodacom Sim card.
